BNSF 1521 is still hauling freight today despite spending over half a century on the tracks (more on that in a bit). Sure it's been rebuilt a few times, but it's nice to see this loco still doing an honest day's work.
According to resources, 1521 started life as Great Northern 400C, an FT-B unit built in 1943; it then became the high-nosed GN 905 in 1959. Eventually it became Burlington Northern 1355, and then got rebuilt as a GP28 in the early 1990s - including a refit with a low nose. Once the BN / ATSF merger happened in 1995 it was renumbered to 1521 and looked like this for a while. The newer paintjob shown in the puzzle pic above is a recent development.
While some might consider this "common power" unworthy of any attention, my thought is that any industrial piece of equipment that has been haul stuff around since World War II deserves our gratitude. Nice work, 1521!
